What we found

Mark's shop had been cutting hair on the High Street for years and had 17 Google reviews averaging a clean 5.0 - genuinely one of the best-rated businesses in the village. What it did not have was anywhere to send someone who searched for it.

The only thing online was one line on the village directory: a name, a phone number, and opening hours that were wrong. People looking for a barber late on a Thursday had no way of knowing he was still open.

  • No site of his own. Everything ran through a third-party listing he couldn't edit.
  • Hours were wrong. The directory listed fixed opening times for a shop that runs by appointment.
  • Reviews were invisible. A 5.0 average was sitting on Google doing nothing for him.
  • No way to call. On a phone, the number wasn't tappable.

The whole site had one job: show the hours, then make it one tap to call.

What we decided

We stripped the brief down to a single action. A barber doesn't need a booking system, a blog or a newsletter. He needs somebody standing on the High Street to know whether he is open, and then to press one button.

The design went the opposite way to most barber sites. Near black, cream serif type, a lot of space and almost no colour, because “one of the few traditional barbers left in Britain” should not look like a franchise. Quiet is the whole point.

  • A live open or closed status. The header reads the current day and time and says “Open now” or “Closed · opens Monday at 9am”.
  • One button, everywhere. Call to book, wired to tel:, repeated down the page. The shop is appointment only, so booking is the only action that matters.
  • Reviews front and centre. The 5.0 and the review count sit in the hero, linked to Google.
  • Coordinate-pinned map. Dropped on the exact door, not the postcode centroid.
  • Prices in plain text. Cut and finish £16, beard trim from £8. No PDF menu.

★★★★★

"Thank you for building such an amazing website for my barbershop. It looks great, is easy to use, and really captures the vibe of my shop. You made the whole process stress-free, and nothing was too much trouble."
Mark · The Barber’s, Chalfont St Giles

The result

From first message to live website was five days. The site scores 100 on Lighthouse performance, weighs under 50 KB, and has no plugins, no database and nothing that can break while he's cutting hair. The whole thing is five sections: in the chair, prices, reviews, find us, book.

Five sessions, finally findable.

Scroll to rebuild. The hardest part here wasn't the design - it was making a first session feel easy to say yes to.

Scroll to rebuild0%

What we found

Stacey runs three Back to Netball sessions and two Walking Netball sessions every week, across three venues, plus umpiring and coaching for schools. All of that lived in her head and in a Facebook group.

The people Stacey most loves to welcome are the ones coming back to netball after school, a break, or an injury - often the most excited to play, and the most likely to hesitate. When the only way in was messaging someone they'd never met, a lot of that quiet enthusiasm never quite made it onto the court. A good website turns ‘maybe one day’ into ‘see you Tuesday’.

  • Nowhere to send people. No website at all - just a Facebook group you had to ask to join before you could even see a session time.
  • Lots of choice, hard to picture. Two formats across three venues and five weekly slots - brilliant once you know it, a lot to take in from the outside.
  • The credentials were hidden. B Award umpire, Level 2 coach, Safeguarding Officer and an official Back to Netball partner - none of it visible.
  • Confidence was the real barrier. Not the price, not the venue - just not yet knowing how warm and easy that first session would feel.

One friendly home for every session, every ability.

What we built

The centrepiece is a session finder: four plain-English questions - which kind of session, which day suits you, what brings you here, what would make it easier - that end with one recommended session, its venue, its time, and a way to say hello. No account, no email gate.

Everything else follows from lowering the temperature. Teal rather than a shouty sports red. Poppins, which reads friendly rather than competitive. Photography of actual sessions with actual players, so nobody arrives to a surprise.

  • Session finder quiz. Four questions to one clear answer, with a fallback if nothing fits.
  • A page per format. Back to Netball and Walking Netball each get their own page, so search can find them separately.
  • The week, laid out. All five sessions with venue, day and time on one screen.
  • Schools, separated. Umpiring and coaching live on their own pages - a different audience with a different question.
  • Price stated up front. From £7.50, pay as you play. No "contact for pricing".
  • Credentials in the open. Back to Netball partner, B Award umpire, Level 2 coach, Safeguarding Officer.

The bit worth stealing

Most small-business sites answer what do you sell. Stacey's had to answer will I feel welcome - and that lives in the design as much as the words: the warmth of the colour, real photos of real sessions, and a friendly face before a fixture list.

We spent longer on the session finder than on anything else on the site, because it's the only part that does the actual job: turning "I might, one day" into "I'll come Wednesday".

Protect St Giles’s Greenbelt

A residents' campaign with a planning deadline, a complicated case, and one thing it needed every visitor to actually do.

High View, Chalfont St Giles
Sections
Seven, one clear action
Run by
Residents, not a developer
Protect St Giles's Greenbelt homepage: a photograph of the field under a deep green overlay with a serif headline
There was no previous website to rebuild - this one was made from scratch, against the deadline.

The problem

Application PL/26/01727/FA proposes 62 dwellings on the field off High View in Chalfont St Giles. Permission was refused on that land in 2020 and the subsequent appeal was dismissed in 2021. The council's draft Local Plan already keeps the field as Green Belt.

All of that is public. None of it is readable. To form a view, a resident had to find the application on the planning portal, open a stack of PDFs, and cross-reference them against the Local Plan and two sets of council minutes. Then they had a deadline to comment by.

  • The case was scattered. Application documents, council records and parish minutes, in three different places.
  • The portal is not built for residents. It is built for planners, and it shows.
  • There was a clock. Comments close on a fixed date, so a site that took a fortnight to build was no use.
  • Credibility mattered more than usual. A campaign site that overstates its case gets dismissed, and rightly.

Every claim on the site is traceable to a source document. That was the brief, before anything else.

What we built

Seven sections, one conversion. The case, the history, the planning process, updates, about and contact all exist so a reader can go as deep as they want, and every one of them funnels to the same place: how to help. A permanent “Click here to help” sits in the header so nobody has to hunt for it.

The tone had to be sober rather than shouty. Deep forest green, generous line length, no capitals shouting at anybody. It reads like a briefing note, because that is what will actually persuade a case officer's inbox.

  • One action, everywhere. A permanent help button in the header and a skip link straight to the comment guide.
  • Points of argument, sourced. Each one drawn from the submitted application documents, Buckinghamshire Council records or Chalfont St Giles Parish Council minutes.
  • The history stated plainly. Refused in 2020, appeal dismissed in 2021, still Green Belt in the draft Local Plan.
  • A correction route. The footer invites anyone who thinks something is wrong to say so, and promises it gets fixed.
  • Shareable. Proper social preview card, because most of the traffic arrives from a WhatsApp group.

The bit worth stealing

A campaign site is a conversion problem wearing a coat. The temptation is to write everything you know. The job is to write the least a reader needs in order to act, and then make acting take one tap.

The most persuasive line on the page is the quiet one at the bottom: run by residents, and if anything here is wrong, tell us and we'll fix it. A campaign confident enough to invite correction is a campaign worth trusting - and trust is the whole game.

What moves the price

Why one job costs more than another.

How many pages

A single page covering who you are, your hours and how to reach you is the quickest thing we build. Menus, price lists and galleries take longer.

What the site has to do

Showing information is straightforward. Taking bookings or payments means more to build and more to test before it goes live.

What you already have

If you have photos, text and a logo ready, we move fast. If we're shooting photos or writing from scratch, that's extra work.

Whether we launch it

Some clients have a domain and want the files. Most want the whole thing handled, which is the separate cost of getting you online.

The alternative

What most small businesses pay instead.

Website builders and directory listings charge every month, forever, and you stop having a website the moment you stop paying.

A monthly subscription

£20 to £30

Every month, indefinitely. Over three years that's several hundred pounds, and the site is only yours while you keep paying.

A website from us

From £30

Paid once. Designed around your business rather than picked from templates. It stays yours, and you only pay again if you actually want something changed.

How paying works

You see it before you pay for it.

We build a working version of your website first and show it to you. If you don't want it, you've lost nothing but a conversation. Nothing is taken up front.

About us

Two people, in Buckinghamshire, who build websites.

Not an agency. No account managers, no discovery workshops, no four-figure invoice for a template.

M

Matthew

Handles client communication, research and design. He is who you talk to from the first message to launch, and he shapes how the whole site looks and reads.

T

Tom

Handles the back end: payment integration, background coding and the technical plumbing. The parts you never see, but would notice at once if they broke.

Why we're cheap

Because we're two people with low overheads who build sites by hand, and because most small businesses in our area are being quoted three or four figures for something that should not cost that.

It isn't a loss-leader and there's no upsell waiting. The price on the site is the price. We'd rather build twenty good websites for local businesses than three expensive ones.

How we work

Research first, design second.

We look you up

Reviews, competitors, what people actually search for. Ten minutes of this changes what we build.

We find the one job

Every site has a single action that matters most. Everything else on the page is in service of it.

We show you first

You see a working version before any money changes hands. Nothing is taken up front, ever.

★★★★★

"I'd definitely recommend you to anyone looking for a top-quality website. Thanks again!"
Mark · The Barber’s, Chalfont St Giles

Let's build yours.

Tell us about your business and we'll send a free preview of your new homepage. No cost, no commitment.

Questions

The things people actually ask.

Why are you so cheap? What's the catch?
There isn't one. We're two people with almost no overheads, we build by hand rather than paying for platforms, and we'd rather do a lot of small jobs well. Nothing is taken up front and there's no subscription afterwards.
Do I pay before I see anything?
No. We build a working version of your homepage and show it to you first. If you don't want it, you've lost nothing but a conversation.
How long does it take?
Most single-page sites are live within a week. The Barber’s went from first message to live in five days, including photography. Bigger sites with several pages take two to three weeks.
Who owns the website?
You do. The files are yours, the domain is registered in your name, and you can host it wherever you like. If you ever want to move away from us, you take everything with you.
What if I need changes later?
Small text and photo changes are usually free. Anything larger we quote before doing. There's no retainer and no monthly fee - you only pay when you actually want something done.
Do I need to give you photos and text?
It helps, but it isn't required. We can write the copy from a conversation, and we offer professional photography from £50 if you'd rather not use phone pictures.
Can you take payments or bookings?
Yes. We build a custom cart wired to Stripe Checkout, which supports cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. That's from £100 on top of the website, with no monthly platform fee.
Do you work outside Buckinghamshire?
Yes. Most of the work happens over email and calls. We're local to Chalfont St Giles and can come to you within reason, which is handy for photography.

Still got a question?

Ask it. We'll answer honestly, even if the answer is that we're not the right people for the job.
