Web design for small businesses

Your business deserves a better website.

We design, build and launch clean, fast websites for local businesses. No jargon, no agencies, no four-figure invoices.

New websites from £30. Really.

Most small business websites were built years ago and quietly turn customers away. We rebuild them into something you're proud to share, usually in days, not months.

Our work

Seeing is believing.

These are concept rebuilds of real local businesses, built to show exactly what we do. Their old site on the left, ours on the right.

The Barbers Shop

Mark's shop in Chalfont St Giles had a single listing on the village directory. We built him a site of his own: coordinate-pinned map, live opening hours, and a clear call to book.

Every website we build

The basics, done properly.

📱

Looks right on phones

Most of your customers will find you on a mobile. Every page is designed for small screens first.

⚡️

Loads fast

No bloated builders or heavy plugins. Lightweight pages that open before people lose patience.

🎨

Feels like your brand

Your colours, your tone, your photos. We study your business first, then design around it.

💬

Explained in plain English

We handle the technical side and tell you what's happening in words that make sense.

How it works

Three steps. That's it.

01

We learn your business

We look at your reviews, your customers and what makes you different, so the website sells what people actually love about you.

02

We build and show you

You see a working version of your new site before you commit to anything. If you don't love it, you don't pay for it.

03

We put it live

Domain, hosting, launch: we handle the lot. You get a website you can share the same week, and we're on hand for changes.

Pricing

About tmdesign

Two people who think small businesses deserve better.

We are Tom and Matthew. We build websites for the sort of businesses that usually get quoted four figures and walked away from.

Most independent shops in Buckinghamshire are in one of two positions. Either they have no website at all, or they have one that was put together years ago and has been quietly working against them ever since.

Neither is really their fault. A proper agency costs more than a small shop can justify, and the cheap alternatives are template builders that leave you doing the work yourself. So we built something in between: proper design and proper build, at a price that makes the decision easy.

We are deliberately small. There is no account manager, no sales team, no ticket system. You talk to the two people who make the thing.

Our method

We research before we design.

Anyone can put a template in front of you. This is the part that makes the difference.

  1. We study your brand

Your social media tells us your style, your tone and how you already talk to customers. The website should sound like you, not like us.

  2. We come and look

We walk past, pop in, or check the street view. Seeing the place and the people who go there tells us more than any brief.

  3. We read your reviews

Your customers have already written your best sales copy. We find what they consistently praise and build the website around exactly that.

  4. We check your competitors

We look at who else is nearby, what they are offering and where they are winning. Then we make sure you are the better option online.

  5. Then we design

Only once we understand the business do we start building. That is why the sites look like the businesses rather than like each other.

What we believe

Six things we hold to.

Cheap should not look cheap

A low price is about keeping our process lean, not about cutting the quality of what you get.

See it before you pay

We build a working version first. If you do not like it, you have lost nothing but a conversation.

Plain English only

You should never need us to translate a sentence we just said. No jargon, no baffling invoices.

Fast, but not rushed

Small sites do not need three month timelines. Most of ours are ready to look at within days.

Local and reachable

We are in the same area as most of our clients. You can find us, and we answer.

Honesty over the sale

If something is not worth doing, we will tell you, even when saying so costs us the work.

Where we work

Buckinghamshire, mostly.

We are based around the Chalfonts and cover the surrounding villages and towns. Everything we build works remotely too, so distance is not a barrier.

What we do

Everything you need to be online, priced separately.

Take what you need and leave what you do not. Nothing here is a bundle you have to buy into.

Good photos are the single biggest difference between a website that looks professional and one that does not. We can shoot your products, your premises or your work.

Not sure what you need?

That is the normal position to be in. Tell us about the business and we will tell you honestly what is worth doing and what is not.

Ask us

Questions

The things people ask us first.

If yours is not here, just ask. We would rather answer than have you guess.

Why is it so cheap?

Because we are two people, not an agency with an office and staff to pay for. We also build lean, hand-coded sites rather than heavy systems that take weeks to configure.

The low price is how we get started and build up a set of local clients. It is not a discount on the quality of the work.

Do I have to pay before I see anything?

No. We build a working version of your site first and show it to you. You decide once it is in front of you, not before.

How long does it take?

For a straightforward small business site, days rather than months. The slowest part is usually waiting on photos and content from you, so the more you have ready, the faster it goes.

Do I own the website?

Yes. It is your site, your domain and your content. If you ever want to move it elsewhere or have someone else work on it, you can.

What if I need changes later?

Send them over. Alterations start at £20 depending on the size of the job, and we will tell you the price before we do the work rather than after.

Do I need to buy a domain first?

Not necessarily. If you already have one we will use it. If you do not, we can sort it as part of getting you online, and the annual cost of the domain itself is usually only a few pounds.

Will this help me show up on Google?

Partly, and we want to be straight about this. For a local business, the biggest factor by far is your Google Business Profile and your reviews, not your website.

What the website does is convert the people who find you: someone taps through from the map, sees a site that looks professional, and books. We make sure the two are properly linked.

Can people pay through the website?

Yes, if it suits your business. We can add secure card payments or deposits from £50. The money goes straight into your own account, never through us, so you stay in control of it.

It is not right for everyone. If every job you do is quoted individually, an enquiry form usually works better than a checkout.

What do you not do?

We do not do large corporate systems, ongoing social media management, or paid advertising campaigns. If you ask us for something we are not the right people for, we will say so.

Still wondering something?

Ask us directly. We answer questions whether or not you end up hiring us.

The Barbers Shop

A traditional barber in Chalfont St Giles who had everything going for him except a website of his own.

The situation

Mark has been cutting hair on St Giles Walk since 1994 and his customers are devoted. What he did not have was anywhere of his own online. His entire web presence was a single entry on the Chalfont St Giles village website, sitting underneath a navigation menu for charities, clubs and local history.

That page had his hours, his address, his phone number and a hand-made barber pole graphic. What it did not have was an address of his own. He could not update it quickly, he could not point Google at it, and it read like a directory entry rather than a business.

What we found

Before designing anything we looked at how Mark actually competes locally. Two numbers decided the whole approach.

  • 17 Google reviews at 5.0. His customers rate him perfectly. The haircut was never in question.
  • A nearby competitor had 36 reviews at 4.9. A lower average, but more than twice the visibility.
  • Open until 9pm, Monday to Thursday. A genuine advantage over most barbers, and almost nobody knew.

So the job was not to make Mark look better than he is. It was to stop a five star barber losing walk-ins to a competitor who was simply easier to find and easier to read on a phone.

His customers had already given him five stars. They just could not find him online.

The result

His own website, live.

This is the real site, running inside this page. Scroll it, click it, it is the same one his customers use.

What changed

  • A web address of his own that he can put on his Google Business Profile, so people searching for a barber land on his site rather than a village directory.
  • Those late opening hours put front and centre instead of buried in a paragraph.
  • Tap to call. Most people looking for a barber are on a phone and want to book, not read.
  • A map pinned to the exact shop, not a text search that could send someone to a competitor.
  • A design that matches the shop: traditional, warm and unfussy, rather than a template.

In Mark's words

What the client said.

Thank you for building such an amazing website for my barbershop! I'm really happy with how it turned out. It looks great, is easy to use, and really captures the vibe of my shop. You made the whole process stress-free, and nothing was too much trouble. I really appreciate all the work you've put in. I'd definitely recommend you to anyone looking for a top-quality website. Thanks again!

XT Brewing Co

An independent brewery with a bold brand that its website was quietly hiding.

Business

What we did
Speculative redesign

Concept, not commissioned

Why we built it

This one was not a paid job. We build concept rebuilds to show what we would do with a business before anyone has to spend anything, and XT was a good test: strong product, strong brand, website not doing either of them justice.

We want to be straight about that. Nobody at XT asked us for this and it is not a live client site. It is here because it shows our work honestly, and because it is exactly what we would send a brewery if we were pitching for the job.

The approach

  • Put the beer first. The original listed the range in a plain table. Beer is bought with the eyes, so the cans became the hero.
  • Made buying obvious. The old site mentioned its shop opening times halfway down a paragraph. Now Shop Beer sits in the header, visible on every screen, so nobody has to hunt for how to buy.
  • Matched the brand, not a template. Heavy display type, black and amber, the confidence the labels already had.
  • Built it for phones. The original told visitors it was best viewed on a desktop computer.

The concept

Running live, right here.
